Barrett backed by "very liberal" endorsers, says Trump: "nothing happening" to Roe
Asked to predict where Amy Coney Barrett "would take the [Supreme] Court," Donald Trump highlighted her liberal support and compared her to past justices, none of whom ever affirmed the child's right to life in any abortion case.Â
"She's going to be as good as anybody that has served on that court," said Trump. "Some of her biggest endorsers are very liberal people."Â
The remarks would have normally set off alarm bells for conservatives. But all serious scrutiny was lost for the ill-mannered debate with Joe Biden.Â
Voters who want to end abortion should be extra concerned, given Trump's politically-timed switch and the Republican tendency to appoint Trojan horses to the Court. Nonetheless, in 2016, the high interest in fighting abortion compelled many Americans to hold back personal reservations and vote for the morally-reprehensible Donald Trump, who along with reports of grabbing women had promised to appoint anti-Roe judges.
Once the 2016 election was over, Trump ceased making promises to turn back Roe. "That's got a long, long way to go," he retreated in his first post-election interview.
The retreat continued throughout the 2020 campaign, and into the Biden debate, as Trump denied that Barrett or even his own reelection would affect Roe v. Wade or abortion:Â Â
BIDEN: The point is that the President also is opposed to Roe v. Wade. That’s on the ballot as well in the court, and so that’s also at stake right now.
TRUMP: You don't know that's on the ballot. Why is it on the ballot? Why is it on the ballot? It's not on the ballot.
BIDEN: It's on the ballot in the court.
TRUMP: I don't think so.
BIDEN: In the court.
TRUMP: There's nothing happening there.
